Kerala has become the first State to set up a price monitoring and research unit (PMRU) to track violation of prices of essential drugs and medical devices under the Drugs Price Control Order (DPCO).

The move comes more than five years after the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) proposed such a system for the States and the Union Territories.

Ravi S. Menon, State Drugs Controller, told The Hindu on Saturday that a society had been registered to get Central assistance for the functioning of the unit. He said the new office would start functioning as soon as infrastructure was set up. There is no price control review mechanism now.

The State Health Secretary would be the Chairman of the society and the Drugs Controller would be its member secretary. Its members include a State government representative, representatives of private pharmaceutical companies, and those from consumer rights protection fora. The society would also have an executive committee headed by the Drugs Controller.

The employees association comprising teachers, officers and employees of state government has threatened to go on strike from tomorrow.

According to the notification, the government has prohibited strike in all state services including state universities, constituent colleges, associated colleges and affiliated colleges.

Veteran Marathi actor Ramesh Bhatkar passed away, Monday, after a battle with cancer. He was 70.

The actor, who was suffering from cancer for more than one and a half years, breathed his last at a hospital here.

"He fought bravely as much as he could. But in the last one month, he was in tremendous pain and we all were worried. He was in ICU for the last fifteen days," actor Jaywant Wadkar told PTI.

Bhatkar's last rites will be held at 10.30 pm at Shivaji Park.

Bhatkar was known for his roles in the TV series "Commander" and "Hello Inspector" and worked for more than 30 years as an actor in mainstream Hindi and Marathi films such as "Aai Pahije", "Kucch To Hai" and "Bhavesh Joshi Superhero".

4. Nitin Gadkari launches highway projects worth over Rs. 2,300 crore in Odisha.

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari Wednesday launched three major highway projects entailing an investment of Rs. 2,345 crore in Odisha, saying it will go a long way in ensuring speedy development in the state.

The projects will considerably improve connectivity of mineral-rich Angul and Dhenkanal districts with the rest of Odisha, Mr Gadkari said while laying the foundation stone for the projects.

The three national highway projects, with a total length 132 km, will cost Rs. 2,345 crore.

Mr Gadkari was accompanied by Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

5. Maharashtra govt sets up panel to review welfare schemes for tribals.

The Maharashtra government has set up a committee to review various schemes being implemented for the welfare of tribals in the state.
