In a latest initiative to recognize young people as critical drivers of sustainable development, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India on Friday launched Youth Co:Lab which aims at accelerating social entrepreneurship and innovation in young India.

To mark the launch, a Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed between AIM, NITI Aayog and UNDP India.

Through Youth Co:Lab, young entrepreneurs and innovators will get a chance to connect with governments, mentors, incubators and investors, who will help equip them with entrepreneurial skills.

The initiative will also convene a series of youth dialogues across several cities such as New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai to promote entrepreneurship across India.

The United Nations' cultural agency UNESCO has appointed Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio as its goodwill ambassador for Indigenous Peoples.

The 25-year-old actress made history as the first Indigenous performer nominated for a best actress honour at the Academy Awards this year for her performance in the film Roma, in which she speaks in an Indigenous language and in Spanish.

The Paris-based organization said Friday that Aparicio, who was born in the poor Mexican state of Oaxaca, was chosen for her commitment to fight racism and advocate for gender equality and indigenous rights.

Aparicio said she felt "proud to be an Indigenous woman" and hopes "to go hand in hand with UNESCO in the best way, to be able to support these Indigenous communities."

India’s largest ‘charkha’ (spinning wheel) made of used plastic waste was inaugurated here on the eve of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, officials said.

The 1,650-kg spinning wheel was inaugurated by Union Minister Smriti Irani, Gautam Buddh Nagar MP Mahesh Sharma, Noida MLA Pankaj Singh and Noida Authority CEO Ritu Maheshwari.  The spinning wheel has been installed in Sector 94 near the Mahamaya flyover. The ‘charkha’, which symbolises Gandhi’s dream of Swadeshi (self sufficing and self reliance), measures 14 ft × 20 ft × 8ft and is made of 1,250 kg of used plastic, according to officials.  Lauding Noida Authority for its efforts, Irani said, “The gigantic spinning wheel is not only representative of construction and beautification but also represents our commitment towards the plastic-free campaign.” The charkha has been recognised as the largest made of used plastic waste in the country by India Book of Records, Noida Authority CEO Ritu Maheshwari said.

Malaysia’s anti-graft agency on Monday ordered 80 people and groups to pay fines totaling about $100 million for allegedly receiving funds from the 1MDB state investment fund.

Former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s brother Nazir Razak, who heads the country’s second-largest bank, was among those listed. So was a former deputy minister, Ahmad Maslan, and the former chief of the federal land development authority, Shahrir Samad.

Branches of Najib’s party and others in the former ruling coalition were also listed, as were 23 companies.

World Trade Organization, WTO will host the first World Cotton Day (WCD) celebrations in Geneva today. This event stems from the application by the Cotton-4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali) to the United Nations General Assembly for its official recognition of a World Cotton Day, reflecting the importance of cotton as a global commodity.

Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani is representing India in the five-day event of World Cotton Day being observed at Geneva beginning today. The plenary session will be attended by heads of states, heads of international organisations and executives from the private sector.
