Almost 15 years after blazing a trail in the country by prohibiting usage of polythene bags, Himachal Pradesh has recently announced a ban on the use of thermocol plates and glasses in the state as they were a major cause of pollution. The government also banned plastic water bottles less than one-litre capacity at official functions.

Making the announcement at a function to mark the World Environment Day at Sundernagar town in Mandi district, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said the government had realised the severity of plastic bag usage in daily life and the way it contributed to polluting the environment. He further said the current water crisis in the state had its roots in the usage of plastic and its indiscriminate dumping in rivers.

The World Bank has approved India’s Rs 6,000 crore central scheme which aims to improve ground water management in priority areas in the country through community participation over a period of five years from 2018-19 to 2022-23.

The ministry will soon seek Cabinet approval for the scheme - called Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY). The priority areas identified under the scheme fall in Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

These states represent about 25% of the total number of over-exploited, critical and semi-critical blocks in terms of ground water availability in India.

India registered a significant decline in Maternal Mortality Ratio. According to the just released SRS bulletin (2016), India has shown impressive gains in reduction of Maternal Mortality with 22% reduction in since 2013. Nearly one thousand fewer women now die of pregnancy related complications each month in India.

Maternal Mortality Ratio of India has declined from 167 in 2011-2013 to 130 in 2014-2016. The decline has been most significant in EAG States and Assam from 246 to 188. Among the Southern States, the decline has been from 93 to 77 and in the Other States from 115 to 93.

President Ram Nath Kovind has recently has announced that the "queen" variety of pineapple would be Tripura's state fruit.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb for the first time flagged-off the export of "Queen" variety pineapples, known for being juicy and sweet, to Dubai. The consignment was sent on a SpiceJet aircraft via New Delhi.

Both the Chief Minister and Governor Tathagata Roy thanked the President for declaring the "queen" variety of pineapple as Tripura's state fruit.

India has moved up four places to the 137th rank among 163 countries on the 2018 Global Peace Index, due to a reduction in the level of violent crime driven by increased law enforcement, according to a report by an Australian think tank.

Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. New Zealand, Austria, Portugal and Denmark also sit in the top five most peaceful rankings.

Syria remains the least peaceful country in the world, a position it has held for the past five years. Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq and Somalia comprise the remaining least peaceful countries.

The index is topped by Iceland, followed by New Zealand, Portugal, Austria and Denmark, whereas war-torn Syria remains the least peaceful country in the world, followed by Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan, and Yemen.

India has improved by four positions in the overall ranking from 141st to 137th.
