Reasoning or General Intelligence has become an integral part of the various competitive exams now-a-days. There is a long list of topics that are covered under reasoning section and that varies from exam to exam. Basically the written exams are conducted in the sectors viz. Banking, Defense and Administrative services, Central services, State services and Judiciary. Blood relation is one of those common topics that comes in all the examinations mentioned over here. Though the difficulty level may vary but the topic remains the same for all these exams.

Now let us know about the topic for the day i.e. “Blood relation” in detail.

“Blood relation” as the name suggests is about identifying the relationship of closed members generally family members. It is seen commonly in examinations like SSC, SBI Clerk, SBI PO, IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, IBPS RRB, Canara Bank PO, Syndicate Bank PO, Railways, CDS, AFCAT and many more.

New pattern Blood Relation Questions asked in various Bank and SSC exams:

The questions may be asked in the following mentioned pattern-

I. Puzzle based blood relation
II. Coded blood relation
III. Direct blood relation

Now let us start describing each type one by one.

Puzzle based blood relation- In such pattern, blood relation is asked in form of a puzzle. Here a family tree is drawn using the given information to solve the question. These are usually lengthy as they have a lot of information to crack the puzzle. They generally come in a set of 3-5 questions based on one summary. This pattern is most commonly seen in Bank exams like- IBPS PO Pre, IBPS Clerk Mains, IBPS RRB- Mains, Syndicate Bank PO, Canara Bank PO, Bank of Baroda PO, SBI PO Pre, SBI Clerk Mains etc.

Example of Blood Relation Puzzle
Roop is father of Geet and Meet is mother of Roop. Tony is sister of Tanu whose daughter is Soni. Kanu, the husband of Meet is the grandfather of Soni. Moni is father of Tony and brother of Preet. Kanu has only two children, both of opposite gender.

1. How is Preet related to Tanu?

(A.) Aunt
(B.) Mother
(C.) Daughter-in-law
(D.) Can’t be determined
(E.) None of these

2. Which of the following is the odd one from the options given below?

(A.) Moni
(B.) Tanu
(C.) Meet
(D.) Tony
(E.) None of these

Coded blood relation- In such type of questions, blood relations are coded with the help of symbols. These questions are solved in two steps. In the first step, we have to decode the symbols and in the second step, identify the relation. They generally come in a set of 3-5 questions based on one summary. These are often seen in various Bank exams.

Example of Coded Blood Relation Question:

‘X + Y’ means ‘Y is the brother of X’.
‘X ? Y’ means ‘X is the daughter of Y’.
‘X ! Y’ means ‘Y is the sister of X’.
‘X / Y’ means ‘X is the son of Y’.
‘X$Y’ means ‘X is the father of Y’.
‘X & Y’ means ‘X is the mother of Y’.

1. Which of the following conclusions can be drawn from the expression- ‘R / S $ Y ? X ! T’?

(A.) X is the sister of T.
(B.) R is the son of S.
(C.) Y is the niece of T.
(D.) All of the above
(E.) None of these

2. Which of the following expression means that ‘E is the paternal uncle of Y’?

(A.) E / J ? O & T + Y
(B.) Y / T / O & J + E
(C.) E / J / T & O + Y
(D.) Y / O ? J & T + E
(E.) None of these

Direct blood relation- In such type of questions, direct relation is given among the persons and one question is asked on one summary. These are the easiest type of the questions. This pattern is popular in exams conducted by SSC, AFCAT, CDS etc.

Example of Direct Blood Relation Question:

Pointing to a girl in the photograph, Salman said, “Her mother’s brother is the only son of my mother’s father.” How is the girl’s mother related to Salman?

(A.) Grandmother
(B.) Sister
(C.) Aunt
(D.) Can't be determined

How to solve puzzle based blood relation questions:

In such questions, information given in the question is used as reference to reach at conclusion. One or more information related to one person is used to create a family tree. But before getting into this approach we must know some codes used for making the family tree.

‘+’ sign is used to denote Male members of the family.
‘-‘ sign is used to denote Female members of the family.
‘{     }’ is used to denote siblings.
‘[     ]’ is used to denote couples.
‘↓’ is used to denote generations.

Now let us solve the given examples on the basis of the information given above.

Example of Blood Relation Puzzle:
Roop is father of Geet and Meet is mother of Roop. Tony is sister of Tanu whose daughter is Soni. Kanu, the husband of Meet is the grandfather of Soni. Moni is father of Tony and brother of Preet. Kanu has only two children, both of opposite gender.

Solution:

Reference:
Roop is father of Geet and Meet is mother of Roop.
Kanu, the husband of Meet is the grandfather of Soni.
Kanu has only two children, both of opposite gender.

Inference:

After using the above hints we can create a following blood chart:

At this point Soni can be the child of either Roop or Roop’s sister. So, we will use this information later.

Reference:
Tony is sister of Tanu whose daughter is Soni.
Moni is father of Tony and brother of Preet.

Inference:

After using the given hints the above blood chart can be redrawn as:

Using this approach any type of the questions based on blood relation can be solved easily.
